university professor was Prime Minister
of Italy, a function he head already held
from 1996 to 1998.
In 1995, Romano Prodi made his debut
on the political scene in Italy as founder
of the center-right coalition “Ulivo”
(Olive Tree), whose victory at the
election brought him the top job in the
Italian government for the subsequent
three years.
From September 1999 to November
2004, Romani Prodi served as President
of the European Commission, where his
main challenges were the consolidation
of the European currency union and the
preparations for the EU enlargement of
2004.
