As usual, the opening ceremony of the Salzburg Festival will be broadcast live on the video wall on Kapitelplatz at 11 am. The keynote address will be delivered by Rüdiger Safranski, philosopher, literary scholar and prize-winning author of great biographies of Heidegger, Nietzsche, Schiller and Goethe. "His books are almost as well worth reading as the works of the authors they deal with, " was the verdict of Marcel Reich-Ranicki, doyen of literary critics, in the spring of 2013. For Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler, Safranski is the "ideal keynote speaker for a cultural event that radiates throughout the world, but is clearly rooted in European intellectual history ". The interim Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival, Sven-Eric Bechtolf, is also delighted at the prominent professor and journalist’s promise to deliver the Festival address: "The fact that philosophy and cultural history are not abstract and grey sciences, but highly personal and socially relevant necessities, that ’thinking ’ is a sensual and vivid process - Rüdiger Safranski has taught us this over and over. "
