As every year, the Opening Ceremony of the Salzburg Festival will be broadcast live onto the video wall on Kapitelplatz at 11 am. The keynote address will be delivered by the philosopher and author Konrad Paul Liessmann. At 1 pm, Hannes Schalle’s film Salzburg – Gesamtkunstwerk im Herzen Europas (Salzburg – A Total Work of Art at the Heart of Europe) will be screened. On May 1, the Federal State of Salzburg celebrated the 200th anniversary of its belonging to Austria. On this occasion, the director Hannes M. Schalle undertook a filmic journey through the city and region of Salzburg. From the Großglockner massif to the Alps of the Innergebirge, through the Salzach Valley, past Castle Werfen into the plains, the journey leads the viewer to Hellbrunn Palace, on to Leopoldskron Palace, to the lakes and finally into the baroque city of Salzburg. The tour guide is Cornelius Obonya, the Festival’s current Jedermann. Max Reinhardt once called Salzburg a Gesamtkunstwerk, a “total work of art”. Indeed, this special place has much to offer, beyond kitsch and clichés such as The Sound of Music and the Mozart “brand”. The historic city centre was declared a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO in 1996.
