Mozart was 14 years old when he was commissioned to write Mitridate for the opening of the theatre season 1770/71 at the Teatro Regio Ducale in Milan, and one can only marvel how the young genius managed to appropriate form and content of the opera seria tradition, for the work is far more than a perfect imitation of great models. Although Mozart maintained the strictures of the genre, the score is imbued with a whiff of Sturm und Drang. It was not enough for Mozart to pander to the courtly convention of glorifying the mighty. His figures are of flesh and blood in this recounting of the conflict between the two princes Farnace and Sifare and their father Mitridate, the ruler of Ponto. Both sons love Aspasia, Mitridate’s fiancée and designated queen, which ultimately leads to their imprisonment and death sentence by their own father. However, it all turns out quite differently…
