This opera was the third joint venture of Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Originally planned as a "divertissement with small chamber orchestra", it grew into a large-scale project combining opera, drama and ballet – and was a flop at its world premiere in 1912. The Salzburg Festival now dedicates itself to "its founders dream, still wonderful: to bring together the most disparate forms of theatre, ballet, drama, music and song." Sven-Eric Bechtolf directed this unconventional production, and he not only adapted Molière´s play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme which originally preceded the opera, but also reinstated the ballet music which Strauss had added later. "One hundred years have passed," said Bechtolf, "since Hofmannsthal began to work on the tale with the ruthlessly practical and dramaturgically highly talented Strauss; one hundred years since the disastrous premiere of Ariadne auf Naxos. We consider this ‘anniversary´ an occasion to revisit the original version. Where could this be more meaningful than in Salzburg?"
