In his Mozart-Da Ponte cycle, which was characterised by courageous and risky new interpretations, director Claus Guth surprised the audience with highly unusual settings, as demonstrated by the first two parts. Le nozze di Figaro (2006) was set in a hallway, and Don Giovanni takes place in a sinister forest, a thicket of desire and forbidden longing through which the main figure wanders, caught in a vicious circle of desires which finally consumes him. From the very beginning, things are not looking good for the legendary womaniser in this production: as always, he kills the Commendatore in the beginning, but before taking his last rattling breath, the latter pulls out a pistol and takes revenge by shooting Don Giovanni in the abdomen. The rest is a spectacular race against death.
