When the curtain lifted on Pierre Audi’s new production of Die Zauberflöte on August 4, 2006, this meant another anniversary, in the midst of the Mozart Year: the performance marked the 200th performance of this classic at the Salzburg Festival. The success story of the Magic Flute began with its Viennese first performance at Schikaneder’s Freihaustheater in 1791, conducted by Mozart himself. At the Großes Festspielhaus, Maestro Riccardo Muti conducted this fairy-tale of the triumph of reason and humanism. Paul Groves sings the role of the noble Prince Tamino, Genia Kühmeier that of Pamina. Diana Damrau gives a brilliant rendition of the Queen of the Night, while her counterpart, the supposedly evil Sarastro who is ultimately revealed as the champion of true humanity, is sung by the wonderful René Pape.
