Shortly before his death in 1880, Jacques Offenbach, the master of the operetta, dared to embark upon writing the grand opera of his dreams – alas, he was not to witness its premiere. He set out to stage the fantastical tales of E. T. A. Hoffmann – with a framework narrative in which the legendary author of dark romanticism tells his stories at an inn, fuelled by alcohol and drugs, allowing the lines between dream and reality to blur. The cast of this production by David McVicar, which most of the critics found rather conventional, promises a great operatic and vocal feast: the American star tenor Neil Shicoff appears as Hoffmann, Ruggiero Raimondi plays his demonic adversary, and the sparkling objects of his dreams or his desires are embodied by such ladies and star sopranos as Waltraud Meier as Giulietta, Angelika Kirchschlager as La Muse and L´ubica Vargicová as Olympia. Kent Nagano conducts the Vienna Philharmonic.
