It was a celebrated concert of the 2015 Salzburg Festival. At the Großes Festspielhaus, Juan Diego Flórez and Vincenzo Scalera at the piano performed works by Leoncavallo, Duparc, Donizetti, Tosti, Gounod and Rossini. Flórez, the world’s leading representative of the fach beautifully described as “tenore di grazia” – equally rare and difficult to master – offered, in the words of Der Standard, “miraculous high belcanto notes, one acoustic race to the top after another. The opener, Leoncavallo’s Aprile, set the tone. And when Flórez arrived at the finale, Gennaro’s aria Partir deggio from Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, plumbing ever more profound expressive depths, he had long overcome all difficult passages with blazing vocalism.” For the encore, he reappeared with a guitar, tossed his bowtie into the piano and gave us an intimate rendition of Bésame mucho, Consuelo Velázquez’ classic.
