Due to the delayed broadcast of Die Liebe der Danae, this evening on Kapitelplatz begins at 8 pm with a repeat of Hannes Schalle’s documentary Salzburg – Gesamtkunstwerk im Herzen Europas. The delayed live broadcast of Richard Strauss’ opera starts at 9:20 pm. The original idea for Die Liebe der Danae was Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s. The poet combined two different tales with each other: the story of Jupiter, who attempts to woo Danae, the daughter of the financially troubled King Pollux, by showering her with gold – and that of King Midas, whose touch turned anything he came in contact with into gold. In the opera, this gift is the reward for allowing Jupiter to “borrow” the figure of the poor donkey driver Midas to court Danae. She, however, falls in love with the real Midas, who approaches her as the king’s messenger Chrysopher. At the culmination of the second act, the love-struck Midas embraces Danae, who is turned into a golden statue. Jupiter agrees to give her back her body, but forced to choose, Danae decides to spend her life with Midas in poverty.
