Stephen Langridge’s production was more or less blasted by the critics: “It fails to do justice to the mastery and modernism of the original; instead it panders to expectations and clichés,” was the cool judgement of the renowned Neue Züricher Zeitung. Accordingly, the director had to endure numerous boos after the premiere. The accolades were reserved on that evening for Riccardo Muti, the star on the podium, who unleashed an orchestral “storm of passions and excessive forces of dramatic sound” together with the Vienna Philharmonic, thus one critic. The young Russian Marina Poplavskaya as Desdemona was also celebrated – Joachim Kaiser of the Süddeutsche Zeitung crowned her “queen of the evening” for her “bell-like purity and accuracy, her blissfully beautiful piano timbre and pianissimo echo effects”.
