The majority of critics was wildly enthusiastic after the premiere in August 2008: "Salzburg has a new masterpiece," one could read there, "ravishing protagonists, a wonderful conductor and a wise director." Bartlett Sher, the director, used the gigantic stage of the Felsenreitschule for sumptuous show effects, producing a fascinating wide-screen spectacle with an enormous range of historic costumes, beautiful arrangements and perfect fighting scenes. Of course, the central focus of this most beautiful of all love stories is on the young Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze and star tenor Rolando Villazón in the title roles. Villazón was celebrated as the "ideal Romeo, with a noble, hot-blooded lilt". And Nino Machaidze was applauded for having delivered an "admirable performance" in the face of the overheated pressure of expectations. After all, she had taken over for Anna Netrebko, who was pregnant. Moreover, the shooting star was able to read in the next day´s newspaper about her "soprano of effervescent brilliance".
