After his celebrated productions, most recently L’amour de loin (2000), the Mozart specialist Peter Sellars directs again at the Salzburg Festival, dedicating himself to Mozart’s opera of reconciliation, La clemenza di Tito. Mozart was commissioned to write this opera in 1789, on the occasion of the crowning of Leopold II. It must be considered a unique legacy, for according to Peter Sellars, “as a great work about truth and reconciliation,” it wishes to give us a vision of peaceful coexistence. The creative team continues the story of the benevolence and clemency of the Roman ruler Titus for its Salzburg production. “How do we live together in an age of conflict?” the director asks. “How do you offer some healing gesture at a time when people are so angry?”
