The Salzburg Festival has always been a forum for those looking for the ultimate breakthrough. The conductor Lorenzo Viotti (28) is among them, as is the violinist Sergey Khachatryan (33), who performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto as the first programme item on 30 July 2017. After the intermission, Viotti – who won the “Young Conductors Award” in 2015 – conducted Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, the “Rhenish”, without a trace of overblown sentimentality.
