Maria Agresta as Marguerite in Gounods Faust
It was his setting of Goethe’s Faust which made Gounod, a composer born in Paris in 1818, famous the world over. Reinhard von der Thannen, who directs the new production at this year’s Salzburg Festival, is particularly interested in the tragedy of Marguerite: “Marguerite is a young woman who believes in love and is encouraged by her encounter with Faust to break out of the conventions of social morale and religious faith that surround her. However, she does not stand a chance in a society in which men’s actions are judged differently from women’s.” Even if she appears in Gounod’s opera as a male fantasy, “she is also a strong female figure who is responsible for her actions, even if she perishes due to the impossibility of reconciling the demands made of her.”
