One of the hottest events of the 2014 Salzburg Festival: Alvis Hermanis’ production of Verdi’s Il trovatore, featuring Anna Netrebko as Leonora, Francesco Meli as Manrico and Plácido Domingo as Count Luna. Ignorant of the fact that they are brothers, the two men meet as implacable opponents, both on the battlefield and on the field of their love for one and the same woman. For they both desire Leonora. One of them, Count Luna, thinks that his noble rank allows him to triumph automatically over the supposed offspring of gypsies and to lead Countess Leonora to the altar. However, Leonora and Manrico, who has been raised by the gypsy Azucena due to a series of mysterious circumstances, have long been lovers in secret, and theirs is true love. Of course, fate must run its course and in the end, no stone is left undisturbed at Luna’s palace.

Conductor: Daniele Gatti | Director: Alvis Hermanis | Orchestra: Vienna Philharmonic | Duration: 150 minutes | Featuring: Anna Netrebko (Leonora), Marie-Nicole Lemieux (Azucena), Francesco Meli (Manrico), Plácido Domingo (Count Luna)
