It was the opera event that eclipsed all others at the 2006 Salzburg Festival: Claus Guth’s production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. It presented a superlative cast: Nikolaus Harnoncourt on the conductor’s podium, Anna Netrebko as Susanna, Ildebrando d’Arcangelo as Figaro, Christine Schäfer as Cherubino, and the Count and Countess portrayed by Bo Skovhus and Dorothea Röschmann. Synopsis: After their wedding, Count Almaviva’s love for his wife has quickly cooled. Instead, he is all the more vigorous in his pursuit of young women, including Susanna, the Countess’ maid, whose marriage to the valet Figaro is imminent. In order to get what he wants, he has assigned the young couple a bedroom in the gentry’s wing of the Palace, so that he can slip into Susanna’s arms at any time. Thus begins a wonderful carousel of intrigues by the clever servant Figaro, who involves the unhappy Countess Rosina in his plans to stop her faithless husband from preying on young women once and for all.
