In Lydia Steier (40), one of the leading opera directors of a new generation, leaves her calling-card for the first time at the Salzburg Festival – a card that has already gathered much prestige. In an interview before the production, she expressed her respect for the great tradition of Salzburg productions of Die Zauberflöte, emphasizing the “challenge to create something particularly refreshing and fascinating”. In this spirit, she has invented a “narrative figure”, the grandfather played by Bruno Ganz, who leads us through the story of this magical opera. “The conceit is that Die Zauberflöte is told as if in a book of fairy-tales. It is a good-night story for the triplets – the three boys – who are the focus of our story,” Lydia Steier explains. The grandfather’s tale affects the audience with its “fairy-tale charm”.

Information: Klaus Maria Brandauer will supersede the diseased Bruno Ganz
