The American director Peter Sellars will deliver the keynote address during the opening ceremony of the 2019 Salzburg Festival at the Felsenreitschule on 27 July 2019. The title of his speech is “Listening to the Ocean: Planetary Change and Cultural Action – The meaning and urgency of ‘ecological civilization’ in the next generation”. Peter Sellars is one of the world’s most important opera and drama directors. His innovative interpretations of masterworks and his collaborations with an extraordinary spectrum of artists have earned him an outstanding international reputation. His most recent work here was the production of La clemenza di Tito at the Salzburg Festival, an outstanding sample of his abilities. This year, he continues his exploration with Mozart in Salzburg, presenting his version of Idomeneo on the same evening at the Felsenreitschule. “Peter Sellars is one of the artists who showed me what musical theatre can be – and must be. He believes in the power of the arts to move us, overwhelming us with his curiosity and his enthusiasm, time and again,” says Artistic Director Markus Hinterhäuser.
