Henze’s opera was first performed at the Salzburg Festival in 1966. Thanks to its musical richness, dramaturgical originality and evocative power which enthrals audiences, it is considered one of the most important operas of the 20th century. The librettists Auden & Kallman chose The Bassarids as the title for their adaptation of Euripides’ tragedy The Bacchae (406 BC). Krzysztof Warlikowski’s new production in 2018 presented the work in the original English, restoring the prologue and intermezzo as well. The work explores human abysses. Dionysus, the God of inebriation, appears in Thebes, and all things irrational are projected onto this figure: fears, dreams, suppressed passions and sexual obsessions. The citizens of Thebes follow him, succumbing to inebriation and ecstasy. The outcome is fatal. One review called The Bassarids a “golden highlight of the Festival”.
