For his comeback as a director in Mozart’s last opera, La clemenza di Tito, at the 2017 Salzburg Festival, Peter Sellars joined the “wild young thing”, conductor Teodor Currentzis, to create a gripping, wise and multi-faceted update of the tale of the late Roman emperor Titus, recounting the story in a new manner close to our own social reality. The director portrays Servilia and Sesto as two figures from a trek of refugees who catch Titus’ attention. His trust, however, is abused, leading to an attempt on the ruler’s life. In musical terms, the opera was also expanded, featuring excerpts from Mozart’s Mass in C minor and the Maurerische Trauermusik. At the premiere, the result was frenetically cheered by the audience. The press reported on a “rousing” opera evening: “Mozart ensures goose-bumps once again in Salzburg.”
