This was the event of the 2017 Salzburg Festival that the entire opera world awaited in breathless anticipation: Anna Netrebko’s role debut as Aida in a production by Shirin Neshat, with the Verdi guru Riccardo Muti on the conductor’s podium. A “wonderful Netrebko” and her “excellent colleagues” and Muti’s performance were duly celebrated by the press, while Shirin Neshat’s production found itself in the cross hairs of criticism. Naturally, Anna Netrebko as Aida was at the centre of the ovations: “At the premiere,” the Kleine Zeitung reported, “Anna Netrebko, in her debut in the title role, confirmed her customary seat on the soprano throne. The brocade of her voice, equally masterful in sensuous and dramatic sounds, and her presence as a performer gave a highly impressive portrait of the Ethiopian princess Aida in a ravishing steel-blue silk dress.” “Indeed,” the Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote, “one could not find a singer with a more beautiful voice for the title role today. Anna Netrebko is audibly at the vocal zenith of her career.” “She stormed a summit,” the New York Times agreed, while El País proclaimed: “Netrebko designates herself the greatest soprano of the 21st century in Salzburg.”
