Opera musicale in a prologue and three acts by Claudio Monteverdi (Salzburg Festival 2018, Haus für Mozart – in Italian). A co-production by CLC Productions/Tangaro, Harmonia Mundi, CNC and UNITEL

Shortly before his death, Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) wrote one of the most remarkable operas of all times, the love story L’incoronazione di Poppea. For the first time, the narrative of an opera was not borrowed from myths or legends, as was common practice during the renaissance, but depicted historical events. In ancient Rome, Poppea strives for the throne of the Empire by way of her marriage to Nero, and she is willing to walk over dead bodies in order to reach her goal. Monteverdi shows the triumph of a society which disdains morals, punishes virtue and rewards greed. In Lauwers’ interpretation, the gods are shown as cripples atoning for their misdeeds, and the protagonists literally walk over the dead bodies of their sins, actions and murderous deeds. The hunger for power, intrigue, cruelty, brutality and manipulation triumph before a backdrop of baroque beauty.
