Opera in three acts by Alban Berg (Salzburg Festival 2017, Haus für Mozart – in German). A production by UNITEL in cooperation with Arte Concert and Medici.tv

The director and visual artist William Kentridge set the opera Wozzeck amidst a dark scenario of animated charcoal drawings and video loops evoking the imagery of World War I, that original catastrophe of the 20th century. Destroyed forests, barbed wire, ruined villages and suffering people form a visual vocabulary reflecting the traumata of the equally suffering protagonist within a visual nightmare. The production and its singers were acclaimed by the press, none more than Matthias Goerne, whose expressive vocalism is “able to roil darkly, rumble threateningly and caress tenderly”. Asmik Grigorian as Marie is an ideal embodiment of the sensuous female, who “ensures the tingling of flesh and thus, doom”. Everything musical theatre can be – here it becomes a true event.
