Opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi (Salzburg Festival 2005, Großes Festspielhaus – in Italian). A co-production of ORF, NHK, BR and UNITEL

It was the opera event at the 2005 Salzburg Festival: Willy Decker´s version of Verdi´s La Traviata featuring the dream team of Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón was greeted by an extraordinary media hype and can now be relived on Kapitelplatz. In Verdi´s music, death is present from the very first note. Thus, in Willy Decker´s production, the Grim Reaper sits on the side of the stage wearing a black coat and watching how Violetta encounters Alfredo and thus the happiness of her life. It was a belcanto feast: with glamorous Anna Netrebko and her entrancingly dark timbre, with Rolando Villazón and his incredibly flexible, brilliant voice, and with the powerful Thomas Hampson as the moralising Germont, cruelly destroying the lovers´ paradise with a trombone-like boom when he comes to visit.

Conductor: Carlo Rizzi | Director: Willy Decker | Orchestra: Vienna Philharmonic | Duration: 140 Minutes | Featuring: Anna Netrebko (Violetta), Rolando Villazón (Alfredo), Thomas Hampson (Giorgio Germont), Helene Schneiderman (Flora)
