Opéra-bouffon in two acts and four scenes by Jacques Offenbach (Salzburg Festival 2019, Haus für Mozart – in French and German). A co-production by ORF, ZDF/Arte and UNITEL

Barry Kosky, artistic director and leading stage director of the Komische Oper Berlin and one of the most successful opera directors of our times, makes his Salzburg Festival debut with the prototype of the “Offenbachiade”, the ur-operetta itself: Orphée aux enfers. This “daring parody of myths”, once excoriated by Émile Zola as a “bonfire of disrespectfulness”, promises fun all the way. After all, Eurydice, the central figure, hates music, embodied by her husband. And Orpheus himself is no more than a boring little music teacher from Thebes; Aristaeus, the divine seducer, is a honey-merchant who fancies himself an actor; and Jupiter, the “father of the gods”, is a dirty old man constantly looking for action. Offenbach’s scorn for bourgeois ideals, the sublimity of music and the institution of matrimony triumphs.
