Amidst a rocky wasteland, the noble Prince Tamino faints when faced with a monstrous snake which is out for his life. When he reawakens, he is confronted with an odd guy wearing feathers called Papageno, three equally odd ladies and a Queen of the Night with a glorious voice who entrusts him with the “Mission Impossible” of liberating her daughter from the clutches of an evildoer named Sarastro, the boss of the Temple of the Sun. – Thus begins a musical adventure which ends with the supposed evildoer Sarastro turning out to be the champion of reason and human kindness. Unlike many other productions, Achim Freyer’s visually powerful staging actually invites the audience to a fantastical fairy-tale land where Good and Evil are engaged in an embittered battle.
