Lydia Steier, one of the leading opera directors of the younger generation, presented a daring new approach to Mozart’s classic in her 2018 Salzburg Festival debut. She cut the dialogues, instead adding a framework narration involving a grandfather (Brandauer) telling his grand-children a bedtime tale. She also moved the magical opera to a 1913 villa. This interesting approach divided reviewers. Some were disappointed at this treatment of a classic; others, while not without misgivings, saw “an imaginative, basically successful production whose musical aspect is supported in high contrast by Constantinos Carydis”. There was vigorous booing, but also enthusiasts who found this production “playful, enchanting, spectacular” and enjoyed it as a “fantastic extravaganza”.

Conductor: Constantinos Carydis | Director: Lydia Steier | Orchestra: Vienna Philharmonic | Duration: 144 Minutes | Featuring: Matthias Goerne (Sarastro), Mauro Peter (Tamino), Albina Shagimuratova (Queen of the Night), Christiane Karg (Pamina), Adam Plachetka (Papageno), Klaus Maria Brandauer (Grandfather)
