Driven by insatiable lust, the nobleman Don Giovanni has chosen Donna Anna as his next victim. When her father intercedes, he kills him in their duel and flees. Anna’s fiancé, Don Ottavio, vows to revenge the deed. Don Giovanni, however, keeps escaping, satisfying his lust with other ladies until he is finally brought to justice after all. The legendary Karajan conducted the 1987 Salzburg Festival’s Don Giovanni, and as the newspapers reported at the time, “the orchestra purrs like a luxury limousine, flexible at any speed. With the utmost balance and equilibrium, we observe an intact and superlative opera world, a distinguished feast for the eyes and ears. It is a Don Giovanni full of nobility and delicate patina. The late Karajan is a bulwark of good taste, and a factory of harmonious sound at the same time.”
