In 2017, Teodor Currentzis and Peter Sellars created an overwhelming production of Mozart’s late opera La clemenza di Tito at the Salzburg Festival: they interpreted it as a touching vision of how the power of justice and reconciliation can point the way towards democracy. In their Idomeneo, the beauty of the music will not mask the fact that this piece is about the anger and desperation of refugees, about violence, traumatization, unresolved conflicts and this time also the destruction of the environment. In Idomeneo, Mozart questions the foundations of the patriarchate, demonstrating that ending war requires an honest process of reconciliation, and that feelings of hatred and rage must not be denied – as psychological wounds must be faced so that they may eventually heal.
