In 1803 and 1804 Beethoven lived inside the Theater an der Wien, in an apartment reserved for its employees, as its directorate had commissioned him to compose Vestas Feuer, an opera based on a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. However, he soon lost interest in that libretto and turned to the Fidelio story instead – a story which touched him as a human being as much as it fired his imagination as a composer, since it contained the “moral, uplifting” elements he expected of an opera tale. From the petit-bourgeois world of the gaoler Rocco in Act I to the tyrannical behaviour of the governor of the state prison in Act II to the celebration of marital love and its victory over tyrannical rule in Act III – it is all one unique plea for humanity and justice, in the guise of an opera about escape and liberation.
