Dramma giocoso in two acts by Gioachino Rossini (Salzburg Festival 1988, Kleines Festspielhaus – in Italian). A production by ORF

La Cenerentola
Ann Murray magnificently sings Cenerentola
Rossini, one of the most influential opera composers of his time, set the fairy-tale of Cinderella to music. Apart from its buffoonish elements, the opera also includes tragic moments. In his production, Michael Hampe is less interested in a magical setting, but rather in the emphasis on satirical social criticism. The “tableaus and costumes, exquisite in their decorative attractiveness” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) he created with his set and costume designer Mauro Pagano are sumptuously effective. Riccardo Chailly at the helm of the Vienna Philharmonic accompanies singers such as Ann Murray as Cenerentola – “simply enchanting, from gentle cantilena to highly virtuosic ornamental vocalism” – and Francisco Araiza. Delve into “three felicitous hours” and a “delicious spectacle of the highest order!” (Salzburger Volksblatt)
