The coronavirus cannot prevent it: Christof Loy will show his production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte with Joana Mallwitz conducting the Vienna Philharmonic at the Großes Festspielhaus, and it will be screened on Kapitelplatz as well. In Così fan tutte, the dramaturge Andri Hardmeier once declared, “an experiment decides upon the supposed faithlessness of the women. An ambiguous game ensues, revealing ever deeper layers of feeling. The unclouded view of the confusion of human relationships opens abysses which seem to break the boundaries of a drama giocoso. Mozart’s stage work, in some ways his most radical, is not so much a ‘School for Lovers’ (thus the piece’s subtitle) but rather a continuous vivisection of hearts. Within the tension between love and passion, security and self-annihilation, faith and betrayal, the couples lose their way in emotional chaos. Mozart finds the inner contradictions of his figures without ever betraying them, and suddenly he makes us doubt the certainty with which we believe we can tell play from earnestness, dream from reality.”
