Grace Bumbry impresses as Carmen
In 1966, Georges Bizet‘s Carmen premiered on the broad stage of the Großes Festspielhaus, conducted and directed by Herbert von Karajan. The following year, this film version of the opera was produced, with a few cast changes. Grace Bumbry, then at the height of her youthful strength and charisma, sang the title role, enchanting not only John Vickers as Don José. “Her vocal achievement was significantly higher even than last year; her vocal control, chanson-like lightness and dramatic explosiveness can hardly be bettered.” (Salzburger Nachrichten) Let yourself be whisked away to an imaginary film set!
