Comedy by William Shakespeare. Incidental music by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (Salzburg Festival 2013, Residenz Courtyard – in German). A co-production of UNITEL and ZDF/3sat

Henry Mason, one of the most imaginative and witty young directors in this country, made his Salzburg Festival debut directing one of the most difficult comedies in literary history: Shakespeare´s A Midsummer Night´s Dream as a total work of art, together with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy´s famous incidental music. Theseus has vanquished Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons, on the battlefield; now their wedding is imminent. A father appears in the midst of the preparations for the feast, complaining that his daughter loves the wrong man. He wants Theseus to sentence disobedient Hermia to death. The daughter, however, flees into the forest at night with her beloved, Lysander, with Lysander´s competitor and his ex-girlfriend hot in pursuit. The forest of desires is a place of subconscious alternatives: here the figures live the lives they cannot or will not pursue in reality.

Director: Henry Mason | Conductor: Ivor Bolton | Orchestra: Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg | Duration: 170 Minutes | Featuring: Michael Rotschopf (Theseus/Oberon), Karoline Eichhorn (Hippolyta/Titania), Markus Meyer (Puck), Tanja Raunig (Hermia)
